Susan O’Brien, MD

University of California, Irvine Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center

  • O’Brien is associate director for clinical science with the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, medical director at the Sue and Ralph Stern Center for Clinical Trials and Research, and a professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine.
  • She is an internationally recognized leader in the research of treatments for both chronic and acute leukemias and an expert on several important therapies that are presently used as the standard of care for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
  • O’Brien’s research background includes serving as the principal investigator for more than 40 funded clinical protocols. She has authored more than 900 articles in peer-reviewed journals and numerous book chapters and abstracts. She also has served as chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines panel on chronic myeloid leukemia.
  • She led the initial clinical research into ibrutinib (Imbruvica) for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and continues research into the Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitor in patients with CLL and small lymphocytic lymphoma.
  • O’Brien is an internationally recognized leader in the research of treatments for both chronic and acute leukemias and an acknowledged expert on several important treatments presently used as the standard of care for CLL.
